Starmer-Mandelson latest: PM accuses opponents of smear campaign after reports of cabinet rift over vetting row

Sir Keir Starmer has accused his opponents of launching a smear campaign and making politically motivated allegations about the Mandelson vetting scandal.

The prime minister said he had been exonerated over accusations he misled MPs by evidence from sacked Foreign Office chief Sir Olly Robbins and that they had been “completely wrong” in accusing him of dishonesty.

“They are now putting any allegation they can and I will tell you for why – they are opposed politically to what this Government is trying to achieve,” he said.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch is said to be pressing for his referral to the Privileges Committee claiming he misled MPs, The Times reported.

On Thursday, the most senior civil servant at the Cabinet Office told MPs that Sir Olly Robbins would not share vetting documents related to Lord Peter Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador.

Cat Little, Cabinet Office permanent secretary, told the Foreign Affairs Committee that she had “multiple discussions” with Sir Olly as she sought information for the humble address about the peer’s appointment to the Washington role.
